Our Approach to Self Harm

Self-harm is frequently triggered by emotional
or social issues that can cause someone to
react by wanting to take away their emotional
pain and feeling the need to cope by causing
themselves physical pain to make it go away.
At Lifegrowth, we seek to help the individual
develop effective ways of coping with the
emotional pain before reducing the self-injury
behavior so there can be effective and
supportive coping strategies in place. As the
individual is using the self-harm as a coping
strategy, taking that away without having
positive coping strategies would leave
someone without any coping strategies and
could seek to cope from the emotions in more
dangerous ways. Once we establish the
positive coping strategies, we work
cognitive-behaviorally to reduce the behavior
of self-harm and begin the person down the
path of healing and purpose.
